It’s Here…. My Top 10 Long and Short Course Running Events in SE QLD during 2020

Wanting an excuse to travel to South East Queensland in 2020. Let’s face it, this part of the world has great weather all year round. It’s also the perfect place to have a run vacation and then go to some of the best beaches, attractions and rain forests you can find. If you’re a local you already know what I’m talking about. So why not give one or more of these a go?

These are listed in date order and contain both long and short distance options.

1. RACQ International Women’s Day Fun Run

When: March 8th 2020

Always a fun one to do along with friends. Normally around 13,500 participants running through the inner Brisbane CBD. I have done this one a few times now and I always enjoy it. Heaps of great places to go with friends afterwards for a coffee or breakfast. Options of both a 5km or 10km distance. People of all ages and abilities participate and some who are there because either they are someone they know has had breast cancer. This is a major charity fund raiser event. P.S. Everyone is encouraged to dress in pink on the day.

2. SEQ Trail Running Series

When: October 13th 2019 through to March 15th 2020

Round 1 October 13th 2019

Round 2 October 27th 2019

Round 3 November 10th 2019

Round 4 November 24th 2019

Round 5 February 2nd 2020

Round 6 February 16th 2020

Round 7 March 1st 2020

Round 8 March 15th 2020

If you like hitting the trails I highly recommend you try one of the events in this series. Events run from October 2019 through to March 2020. They are very well organised, great courses and you can choose from a couple of different distance options with each event ranging from around 7km up to 20km.

I have participated in several of these events and they are a lot of fun, the course is always really well marked and it's very casual with no pressure.

What more could a budding trail runner ask for!

3. UQ Twilight Run

When: April 28th 2020

It’s one of those few events that start in the later part of the afternoon rather than the morning. Always good for the non-morning runners…there is some of them isn’t there??

Options of Half Marathon, 10km, 5km and 1km. It has always been a popular one and the participant shirt is always on trend.

There is entertainment, food trucks and even fireworks. Wearing your glow in the dark gear is also encouraged.

P.S. When I started running regularly as a sport this was one of my first ever events. Image below was me in 2013 at UQ Twilight Run attempting to run my first ever half marathon. This particular year got called off part way through due to a severe storm so I never got to actually complete it!

4. Brisbane Marathon

When: June 6th - 7th 2020

On this course you get to take in the iconic Brisbane course through the CBD and South Bank and over the Story Bridge. There is a Marathon, Half Marathon, 10km, 5km and 2km event. It is also a qualifier for the World Marathon Majors and Wanda Age Group World Rankings (if that is up your alley). For me, it’s more about getting out there and enjoying the day. Afterwards you can check out some of the amazing local food options (which there is no shortage of). The local weather is perfect for running in June as well, not too hot and not too cold, it’s just right!

5. The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail

When: June 19th – 21st 2020

This is one I definitely want to do but haven’t got to yet. Although in 2020 I will be crewing for a friend doing the 100 mile.

The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail is about an hour out of Brisbane and just west of Ipswich. It is for the longer distance runners with options of 200 mile, 100 mile, 50 mile and a Marathon. It takes in lots of little country towns along paths and trails. The event is very well organised and a must if you like the bigger distances. It is fairly flat as well and takes in some really picturesque places. They also allow pacers for those who participate in either the 100 or 200 mile event. P.S. I have heard from some good sources that the tables at the check points are like grazing platters of all sorts of good stuff runners love!

6. Gold Coast Marathon

When: July 4th - 5th 2020

For the Marathon enthusiast this is an IAAF Gold Label Road Race. It’s a flat fast course and takes in some the glitter strip and beaches of the Gold Coast. Just one hours drive from Brisbane, it’s one to add to your bucket list. The running conditions are pretty good with low humidity and mild temperatures. Over the two days there are several events to choose from including a 10km, Half Marathon and Marathon.

7. Jetty 2 Jetty Fun Run

When: July 19th 2020

In Queensland we love the water, and yes we are very spoilt for options. Jetty 2 Jetty is a very scenic route along the waterfront of Redcliffe. Options include a Half Marathon , 10km, 5km and 3km. They even include a Healthy Living Expo with several different stall holders. The event is hosted by the local running club and another good one to go out and get behind.

8. The Guzzler

When: July 25th & 26th 2020

Calling all Ultra Runners!! In its second year in 2020, this is one tough course that’s not for the faint hearted. I took up the challenge with this in 2019 so I can speak from experience. If you are looking for something big and ultra in 2020 you should give this one a go. Starting and ending on Mt Cootha, just west of Brisbane, you will get to take in some pretty amazing landscapes and climb some pretty hefty elevation. But don't let that discourage you, it is well worth it. There are three distance options 21km, 50km and 100km. It has a great atmosphere and true runner comradery is on display.

Go HERE to check out all the details.

9. Sunshine Coast Marathon

When: August 16th 2020

I personally haven’t run this one but I know a lot of people who have and they always comment on how good it was. Hence why it’s made the list. It’s located in a stunning location on the beautiful Sunshine Coast, just a bit over one hours drive north of Brisbane. Options include a Marathon, Half Marathon, 10km, 5km and 2km, so there’s something for everyone. Once your done with running there are loads of other things to do as well. You could stop at the famous Australia Zoo, there are some pretty good markets around or the days are beautiful in August so a trip to the beach is also an option.

10. The Lamington Classic

When: October 24th & 25th 2020

Yes, this one's a bit of a sentimental favourite and not just because I’m the race director. It’s filled with history and running nostalgia being the oldest trail run in Australia. Established in 1970, it takes in parts of the Lamington National park, which is world heritage listed. This place is absolutely stunning. I often think when I’m out there, that I’m among the privileged few who have ever experienced this place. If you can I highly recommend you make the effort to explore this area, even if it’s just once in a life time. This event offer options of a Marathon and Half Marathon both of which are on trail along the famous border track. Follow the link HERE for more information.

So there you have it. My top 10 running events in SE QLD for 2020. With so many options locally to run it's hard to keep it at just 10!
